I started collecting them because I was sick of people saying “No one voted for racist reasons”, “The nation voted for SOVEREIGNTY”, “The nation voted out because we wanted to leave the single market”, and hundreds of other baseless claims, in a bid to push their own post-Brexit agendas (leave single market, curb immigration, reform labour laws, use EU citizens as pawns).
Everyone seems to think that everyone else voted for the exact same reasons as they did, when the truth is, the list of motives could not *be* more diverse. And many of those reasons are diametrically opposed, as some Leave voters are now beginning to discover. How does Dan Hannan create his European Singapore if there are restrictions on freedom of movement? How do we pump more money into the NHS when trade barriers and loss of investment and the sterling crisis will leave the country poorer than ever before? How do we continue to attract foreign investment while telling the rest of the world to go fuck itself?
The united front that the various Leave campaigns showed until June 23 is crumbling, and will soon descend into open warfare. Which is probably one explanation for the panic in the Leavers’ cry of “Stop Remoaning!”
There was one question on the ballot paper, and one question only: “Do you wish to exit the European Union”? The result gives no one any mandate to do any more than that.
“It’s over, we are out” is such a depressingly short-sighted and childish response. There are plenty of details that need to be hammered out yet, and we should all be allowed a say in those discussions.
